Just a few minutes’ walk from Albergo Sporting is where the cable car departs, climbing up to Pejo 3000, the Peio ski area nestled among the mountains of the Ortles-Cevedale group, on the edge of the Stelvio National Park. Our hotel is among the closest to the lifts, as well as just 150 meters from the Pejo Fonti Thermal Center: convenient for those who want to ski in the morning and relax in the afternoon without moving the car.
The cable car departs from Tarlenta, at 2,000 meters, and in just a few minutes climbs up to 3,000, near the old Mantova refuge. From there, you descend along Val della Mite, an eight-kilometer run, one of the longest in the Alps, with the glacier accompanying the view for much of the descent. In total, the ski area has six lifts and twenty kilometers of slopes, designed for those seeking snow without the crowds of the big resorts.
For children there’s Pejo Kinderland, the high-altitude ski school with inflatable rings, while those who love freestyle will find plenty to enjoy in the FunSlope area.
Beginners can rely on the Italian Ski School for a few lessons before tackling the longer slopes. Those who prefer to move under their own power can instead choose ski touring or snowshoeing, perhaps with one of the guided outings offered by the Stelvio Park, which knows every corner of these mountains. To reach the lifts, simply hop on the free ski bus, with a stop right in front of the hotel: no car to warm up in the morning, no parking to search for.
In the warmer season, the cable car becomes the easiest way to gain altitude without effort, and from there begin a relaxed walk or a more challenging trek toward mountain huts and alpine lakes. From up high, it’s easy to see why Peio lies at the heart of the Stelvio National Park: ridges, glaciers and valleys as far as the eye can see, with the Ortles-Cevedale group as a backdrop and the peaks of Palon de la Mare and Vioz closing the horizon.
